ChatGPT Can Directly Spend Your Money. It's a Huge Deal.
This week, OpenAI launched a huge new feature in ChatGPT: Instant Checkout.
Instant Checkout goes beyond a mere addition to the chatbot, though. Along with it, OpenAI also rolled out their open-source Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP).
It’s a huge deal for anyone who buys (and sells!) things online. It also makes Generative Engine Optimization a need to have instead of a nice to have.
Why? The new technology lets you buy things right in the ChatGPT interface. Basically, ChatGPT can spend money for you.
On the brand side, this makes ChatGPT (and other chatbots, if they adopt the ACP) into a sales channel, not just a source of customer referrals.
Tellingly, OpenAI chose to launch the new system with one merchant partner: Etsy. They clearly believe this new tool will make it far easier for people to find and buy things from small, artisan merchants.
More pointedly, it’s a shot across the bow for Amazon!
