Open Mic Night, GPT Style
In a previous video, I talked about using Google’s Gemini 2.5 to brainstorm awesome ideas for YouTube videos, blog posts, and the like.
One thing it came up with really grabbed my attention: the idea of an AI-powered standup comic.
Humor is one of the hardest things for AI to get right. It’s inherently subjective, very human, and often relies on walking a thin line between pushing boundaries and crossing them.
For all those reasons, it felt like a cool technical challenge. So, I built it!
I haven’t made the recommended YouTube video yet, but I did write the whole thing up in a giant Medium article.
In a nutshell, I first used OpenAI’s stellar Deep Research tool to research everything comics have learned about best practices over the last 100 years, and condense that down into an 11,000+ word report, complete with line-by-line breakdowns of classic comedic routines.
I then fed that into OpenAI’s latest models, along with my own prompting, via the Assistants platform.
The end result is an AI that can write jokes or entire standup routines on any topic you give it.
This is a fun example, but you could use the same approach to develop an AI “expert” on nearly any topic.
Just follow the same Deep Research → Complete guide to the topic → Deliver to an LLM as context w/ good prompting→ Your own super smart and specialized AI system.
You Won’t Believe Who Wants to Buy Chrome
The US government wants to split the Chrome browser off from Google and force them to sell it to another company. And you won’t believe who’s interested in making an offer.
This one started out as a joke Jared and I riffed on in a previous Niche Pursuits News episode, and now it’s becoming reality.
Check out the latest podcast. I also brought a very special, very adorable “guest”! Watch on Youtube.
